About Duane A Mitchell

DUANE A. MITCHELL, M.D., PH.D., is the Assistant Vice President for Research at University of Florida and Associate Dean for Translational Science and Clinical Research at the UF College of Medicine. He currently serves as the Director of the UF Clinical and Translational Science Institute and Co-Director of the Preston A. Wells, Jr. Center for Brain Tumor Therapy. Dr. Mitchell is the Phyllis Kottler Friedman Professor in the Lillian S. Wells Department of Neurosurgery at University of Florida and the State of Florida Endowed Cancer Research Chair at the UF College of Medicine. Dr. Mitchell graduated from Rutgers College in New Brunswick with a bachelor’s degree in biology before receiving his medical degree (M.D.) and doctorate degree (Ph.D.) in immunology from Duke University in Durham in 2001. Dr. Mitchell received postgraduate training in pathology and neuro-oncology research at Duke University Medical Center prior to joining the faculty as an Assistant Professor. During his tenure at Duke, Dr. Mitchell developed pioneering programs in brain tumor immunotherapy research and held positions as Director of Preclinical Research at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center and Associate Director of the Duke Brain Tumor Immunotherapy Program. He also served as an active member of several institutional regulatory boards governing the conduct of human clinical trials. In 2013, Dr. Mitchell joined the University of Florida faculty and leads a comprehensive brain tumor program focused on clinical and translational research. His addition to the brain tumor program at UF was made possible by the Wells Foundation gift, combined with matching funds from other university sources, totaling over $20 million dedicated to brain tumor treatment and research. He has considerable clinical and translational research experience, holding five FDA-approved investigational new drug applications (INDs) governing the conduct of ten novel immunotherapy clinical trials based on discoveries made in his laboratory. Dr. Mitchell has received many honors and awards including induction into the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and a 2016 Top 10 Clinical Research Achievement Award from the Clinical Research Forum in Washington, D.C. for his team’s advancement of a novel therapeutic vaccine for patients with glioblastoma. Dr. Mitchell currently serves as an appointed member of the NCI Board of Scientific Counselors, Chair of the NCI Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium Immunotherapy Committee and Gubernatorial Appointee to the Florida Center for Brain Tumor Research Scientific Advisory Council. Dr. Mitchell has been invited to serve on numerous scientific advisory boards for private, government, and academic institutions, and to speak on neuro-oncology and cancer immunotherapy in national and international venues. Dr. Mitchell lives in Gainesville, FL with his wife of 20 years, Michelle, and their three sons, Anthony, Brandon, and Austin.
